Cape Town has activated a new gas to energy plant at the Coastal Park Landfill in Muizenberg, a facility designed to generate about 2 megawatts of electricity. The project is expected to power more than 4 000 households by converting landfill gas into usable energy while reducing methane emissions.

The initiative forms part of a wider investment drive, with the city planning to spend a further R82 million on expanding gas to power capacity. Officials say the programme will cut reliance on Eskom, improve waste management, and generate carbon credit revenue to support future infrastructure.
