Severe flooding and landslides in northern Sumatra have been described by scientists as an extinction-level event for the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan, the world’s rarest great ape.

Conservationists say large areas of habitat were destroyed, potentially killing a significant share of the already tiny population and leaving survivors without food or shelter, worsening long term extinction risks.
