A US federal court has sentenced Ryan Wesley Routh to life in prison after convicting him of attempting to assassinate former president Donald Trump during the 2024 election campaign.

Prosecutors said Routh planned the attack at a Florida golf course and was intercepted by security before shots were fired. The judge cited the seriousness of the offence in imposing the maximum sentence.
