New Trial-Within-a-Trial Threatens Further Delays in Meyiwa Case

Another trial-within-a-trial is set to slow the Senzo Meyiwa murder proceedings once again, as the Pretoria High Court considers the admissibility of a disputed statement linked to witness Sifiso Gwabini Zungu. Police say the statement places the accused at a Vosloorus hostel on the night the Bafana Bafana captain was killed.

Zungu denies making the statement and alleges he was coerced into signing documents he did not understand. Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng has ruled that the authenticity of the statement must be tested, delaying the main trial as lawyers prepare for yet another evidentiary hearing.
