The conventional wisdom has been that the party lost the middle class but retained a rural and poor black base deep enough to keep it in power.
The numbers say otherwise. Rural voters: below 50%. Township voters: below 50%. Households taking home two to three thousand rand a month: below 50%. Black voters overall: below 50%. And in the established, multi-generational suburban middle class, the ANC is polling at 3%.
