Dr Frans Cronje and Marius Roodt discuss the Local Government Election.
13 minDr Frans Cronje, editor of The Common Sense, and deputy editor Marius Roodt discuss the local government election results. While the town and city results will dominate the headlines, the bigger story is that South Africans are leaving the formal political system. Only one in ten adults voted for the ANC, down from close to 60% when Frans and Marius started tracking it.
Another trend flagged by Frans and Marius is that of enclavisation, with recent polling from The Common Sense and Social Research Foundation showing that about 80% of South Africans say their communities are taking over things from the state. From zama-zamas to golf estates, private actors are taking on what were once the functions of the state, and that trend is stronger than any election result.
Frans and Marius also cover the risk of a coalition in name only, why an ANC and DA pact is the one deal that could hold the Union together, and the races to watch.
