Dr James Myburgh and Dr Frans Cronje debate whether the DA should use Phala Phala to force reform from Ramaphosa, or avoid triggering a doomsday coalition with the EFF and MK.
12 minIn this clip, Dr James Myburgh and Dr Frans Cronje debate what the DA's response to the Phala Phala debacle should be. Frans argues that the DA should use this opportunity to press President Cyril Ramaphosa aggressively for reform. In return, they will support Ramaphosa through the process. Frans says that the DA should first see that the ANC is willing to do more than just talk and if this is demonstrated to them then they should use this as evidence of the ANC's seriousness. Frans then argues if the ANC is unable to demonstrate this seriousness, then the DA should bring forward a motion of no confidence to force the decision upon Ramaphosa and the ANC. James counters by saying that the DA should be cautious about potentially pushing the ANC into a coalition with the EFF and MK as voters may place the blame for that coalition on the DA. James continues that the DA should also be cautious about doing the work of bad people for them, as the original criminal case was opened by a Zuma ally, Arthur Fraser. Frans agrees with James that caution is wise, however, he asks whether or not the country is going to have to face the reality of the “doomsday coalition” anyway and if so, whether it would not be better for the DA to get ahead of the issue to exert some measure of control over what happens.
